Elcock Associates Chartered Surveyors and Architectural Designers are delighted to have been appointed as the main contractor to return a fire ravaged building and the businesses within to its former glory.
Last week residents were evacuated from their homes after a fire engulfed a block of residential flats in Bournemouth.
Emergency services attended the fire in Old Christchurch Road Bournemouth early morning last Tuesday after the fire broke out at Sharkey’s Sports Bar and quickly rose to the flats above.
Firefighters had thought the fire was contained after a couple of hours on site when one of the half-dozen residents saw smoke rising again from the flats above The George Tapps building – formerly the Litten Tree.
Crews of firefighters continued aided by other stations locally and tackled the blaze fully. Incident commander Karen Adams said seven appliances and an aerial platform were sent to the scene over the four hour period. “It’s spread from Sharkey’s pool hall into the flats above up on the first floor,” she said. “We think some underground fire spread. It’s like a rabbit warren down there, some of it is disused and it’s a big old building.”
“It was an intensely hot fire, really hard working conditions,” she added. “The ventilation was very restricted so, to make it quite clear and to get it aired, it was very difficult as some of the windows had been painted shut.”
This is where Elcock associates have been drafted in by the owners of the multiple businesses and freeholders of the apartments above. The local firm will assess the structural integrity of the whole building and oversee the making safe of separate units ready for inhabitation when signed off. There is works to do prior to this including strip outs of the businesses damaged which in itself holds issues due to health and safety and structural soundness inside and working conditions.
Adam Elcock MD of Elcock Associates commented “ We are of course devastated for the owners and residents of this building due to this fire, and are of course happy to be the chosen partner for all these works which is an area of specialism for us. Photos of the fire damage show that fire doors played a great part in protecting areas of the building from further damage or even loss of life and we are glad these regulatory items were being used correctly thus hampering the progress of the flames. All too often we see fire doors propped open in multiple apartment buildings for convenience. We are keen to get on site and get our clients businesses open as usual ASAP”
